Getting Started with Triple Depth Sensor Configuration

Introduction

Starting from version 2.5.0.158, iPi Mocap Studio includes experimental support of Triple Depth Sensor configuration. It helps to solve occlusion problems thus allowing to record more complex motions and to track two actors with depth sensors. The quality is comparable to 6 PS Eye configuration but the capture area is smaller (about 2.5 by 2.5 meters).

The usage of Triple Depth Sensor configuration is similar to Dual Depth Sensor configuration except the following aspects:

  • Triple Depth Sensor configuration requires Standard Edition. In other editions export is disabled for projects with Triple Depth Sensor configuration.
  • Recording from three depth sensors requires at least three separate USB 2.0/3.0 controllers in your PC, similar to recording with 6 PS Eye cameras. More info on USB controllers.
  • Calibration of Triple Depth Sensor configuration can be performed only with glowing marker like flashlight. This implies that, in calibration video, the color stream should be recorded along with depth data: only modes with "(depth+color)" should be used. Action videos can still be recorded with depth data only.
Please note, this feature is currently at experimental stage.

Scene Set-up

Ideally, depth sensors should be placed at apexes of equilateral triangle with sides equal to about 6 meters:

Ideal Scene Configuration

In practice it may not always be achievable due to available space size and configuration, mount positions, USB and/or power cord lengths, etc. Thus, sensor positions may slightly differ from ideal ones. Please look at the example from real mocap session:

Calibration

To calibrate Triple Depth Sensor configuration glowing marker should be used:

Calibration with the Aid of Glowing Marker

Calibration procedure is almost the same as described in this article: Dual Depth Sensor Calibration using Flashlight.

The result of calibration should look like this:

Other Steps

Other aspects of Three Depth Sensor configuration are the same as for Dual Depth Sensor configuration. It includes performance video recording, processing, clean-up and export.
